How it works
Official quarterly figures · projection labelled · sources linkedThe live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). Nigeria publishes its debt once a quarter, not daily, so this is a projection between quarterly figures, not an official figure.
projected = 166,788,480,190,000 + 456,299.6921 × (seconds since Jun 30, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)
The rate is the official change from Jun 30, 2025 to Jun 30, 2026: ₦166,788,480,190,000 − ₦152,398,613,100,000 = ₦14,389,867,090,000 over 365 days = ₦456,299.69 per second. We use the change over the latest twelve months rather than the last quarter because quarterly changes swing with the exchange rate (about a third of the debt is in foreign currency) and with issuance. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new quarterly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.
How often it's published. Quarterly. The DMO publishes each quarter-end position as a PDF about three months after the quarter ends. The next quarter-end position (September 2026) is expected from the Debt Management Office roughly three months after the quarter ends; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears.
Per person divides by the World Bank's estimate of 237,527,782 people on Jul 1, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.
Note. Why the DMO: it is the statutory manager of Nigeria's public debt and states the total itself, with the date and the exchange rate it used. The fetcher reads every quarter-end PDF from the last year and checks that domestic plus external equals the total.
Note. Wider than central government: the DMO's headline total includes state governments and the FCT, so it is not like-for-like with a central-government-only page. The federal-government-only amount is shown as a fact.
Note. Exchange rate: the DMO converts naira debt and dollar debt using the Central Bank's rate at the date; the naira figures here are as stated in naira.
Note. Currency: Nigerian naira. The World Debt Clock converts it to US dollars at the US Treasury's Reporting Rates of Exchange (a quarterly official rate as of 30 September 2026; the page for the World Debt Clock shows the rate and its date).
Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
