How it works
Official monthly figures · projection labelled · sources linkedThe live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). Australia publishes its debt once a month, not daily, so this is a projection between monthly figures, not an official figure.
projected = 981,441,608,000 + 672.2453 × (seconds since Sep 30, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)
The rate is the official change from Sep 30, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026: A$981,441,608,000 − A$960,241,680,000 = A$21,199,928,000 over 365 days = A$672.25 per second. We use the latest twelve months rather than the last month because changes between single reporting dates swing with the issuance calendar and short-term borrowing. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new monthly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.
How often it's published. Monthly. The AOFM updates its Data Hub with each month-end portfolio in the days after the month ends. The October 2026 month-end figure is expected on the AOFM Data Hub in the following weeks; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears.
Per person divides by the ABS's estimate of 27,921,150 people on Mar 31, 2026. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.
Note. Why the AOFM: it issues and manages the Commonwealth's debt, and its Data Hub is the official, machine-readable monthly record. The fetcher checks that the three instruments add up to the total and that the bonds agree with the AOFM's separate annual series for every completed financial year.
Note. What is not in it: only Commonwealth securities. State and territory government debt (large in New South Wales and Victoria) is not included, and neither are the Commonwealth's non-securities liabilities, so this is not Australia's total public debt.
Note. Face value: indexed bonds are at face value; other measures such as market value or the accounting value on the government's balance sheet are lower or higher and are not used.
Note. Currency: Australian dollars. The World Debt Clock converts them to US dollars at the ECB's daily reference rate for AUD.
Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
