Brazil Debt Clock

The Brazilian general government (federal, state and municipal) owed R$11,113,782,530,000 (R$11.11 trillion) on Sep 30, 2026, according to the Banco Central do Brasil, Sistema Gerenciador de Séries Temporais. This is the Banco Central do Brasil's gross general government debt (DBGG, SGS series 13761): the debt of the federal government, the social security system (INSS), and state and municipal governments, in reais and before subtracting any assets. It does not include state-owned companies or the Central Bank's own liabilities. Under the Central Bank's methodology, in use since 2008, it does include the Central Bank's repurchase operations with government securities, because of their link to Treasury debt, but not the Treasury securities held in the Central Bank's own portfolio. The Central Bank also publishes net public sector debt, which subtracts assets and is a different measure. The page shows the DBGG as a share of GDP as a fact. That is R$52,074.45 per person: the debt divided by IBGE's estimate of 213,421,037 people in Brazil on Jul 1, 2025. The clock below starts from that official figure and projects forward at the past 12 months' pace (about R$3.74B a day), the official change from Sep 30, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026. Brazil reports its debt once a month, not daily, so the ticking number is a projection, not an official figure; it re-bases when the next monthly figures come out.

How it works

Official monthly figures · projection labelled · sources linked

The live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). Brazil publishes its debt once a month, not daily, so this is a projection between monthly figures, not an official figure.

projected = 11,113,782,530,000 + 43,293.6660 × (seconds since Sep 30, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)

The rate is the official change from Sep 30, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026: R$11,113,782,530,000 − R$9,748,473,480,000 = R$1,365,309,050,000 over 365 days = R$43,293.67 per second. We use 12 months rather than the last month because month-to-month changes swing with auctions and redemptions. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new monthly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.

How often it's published. Monthly. The Banco Central do Brasil publishes each month-end figure about a month after the month ends (series 13761). The October 2026 month-end figure is expected from the Banco Central do Brasil about a month after the month ends; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears.

Per person divides by IBGE's estimate of 213,421,037 people on Jul 1, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.

Note. Why this measure: DBGG is the headline gross debt statistic in Brazil's fiscal reporting. It is broader than the federal Treasury debt alone because it includes state and municipal governments.

Note. Gross, not net: this is not net of the government's assets. The Banco Central do Brasil publishes net public sector debt separately.

Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
