Colorado state + local debt is reported once a year by the Census Bureau, about two years after the fact. Real borrowing happens in lumps when bonds are sold and is repaid on schedules, so the page shows the latest official figure without ticking it forward, because Census's own sampling error is larger than the change it measured.

How it works

Official annual figures · projection labelled · sources linked

Why this number doesn't tick. Only one official year is available, so there is no defensible trend to project. The figure shown is the official total.

How often it's published. Annual. The Census Bureau's Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances comes out about two years after the fiscal year (survey year 2024: July 2026; survey year 2023: July 2025). The next Census figures, for survey year 2025, are expected around mid-2027, based on the last two release dates.

Per Coloradan divides by the Census Bureau's estimate of 6,012,561 residents on Jul 1, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-Coloradan figure rises only with the debt.

Note. Census publishes Colorado's state + local total as $86.85 billion for 2024 (coefficient of variation 8.81%) and $77.17 billion for 2023. State + local here is exactly Census's state figure plus its local figure.

Note. Census's figures are the newest official state + local totals that use one definition for all 50 states, but they lag about two years, so the page shows the official figure as of June 30, 2024. Colorado's own audited report is fresher but is not used here: it covers a narrower scope and would not be comparable with the other states.

Note. The 2023→2024 change ($+9.68 billion) is smaller than about two standard errors of the Census estimate (about $15.3 billion at a 8.81% coefficient of variation), so Census's data does not show which way the debt is moving. This page therefore shows the official figure as published and does not tick it forward.

Note. Caution: Census's own sampling error on Colorado's local debt for 2024 is large (coefficient of variation 12.10%), so the local figure, and therefore the total, can be far from the true amount. The figures are shown exactly as Census published them.

Note. Not included: unfunded pension and retiree-health liabilities, and the state's share of the federal debt.

Note. Colorado's state fiscal year ends June 30. Census survey year 2024 covers each government's fiscal year that ended between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024; the clock dates it June 30, 2024, the end of that window.

Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
