How it works
Official quarterly figures · projection labelled · sources linkedThe live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). India publishes its debt once a quarter, not daily, so this is a projection between quarterly figures, not an official figure.
projected = 201,168,890,000,000 + 482,966.4510 × (seconds since Mar 31, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)
The rate is the official change from Mar 31, 2025 to Mar 31, 2026: ₹201,168,890,000,000 − ₹185,938,060,000,000 = ₹15,230,830,000,000 over 365 days = ₹482,966.45 per second. We use the latest four quarters rather than the last quarter because quarter-to-quarter changes swing with the borrowing calendar, treasury bill rollovers and small savings flows. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new quarterly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.
How often it's published. Quarterly. The Department of Economic Affairs publishes each quarterly report on its website, roughly three months after the quarter ends. The figures are provisional. The next quarterly report (quarter ending June 2026) is usually published about three months after the quarter ends; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears. Figures are provisional and are revised in later reports.
Per person divides by the NCP's estimate of 1,423,435,000 people on Mar 1, 2026. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.
Note. Why this measure: the Department of Economic Affairs' gross liabilities as per the FRBM Act is its widest published quarterly figure for the Union Government, and the nearest match to the US clock's gross Total Public Debt Outstanding.
Note. Provisional and revised: the reports mark the figures provisional and revise earlier quarters when a new report is published, so past values on this page can change slightly.
Note. Population: India has had no census since 2011, so debt per person divides by the official projected population (National Commission on Population) for 1 March 2026.
Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
