Texas Debt Clock

Texas state and local governments owed $389,326,794,000 ($389.33 billion) at the end of fiscal year 2024 (Jun 30, 2024), according to the US Census Bureau, Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances, table GS00LOCALFIN: $70.05 billion of state government debt and $319.28 billion of local government debt. That is $12,277.80 per Texan: the debt divided by the Census Bureau's estimate of 31,709,821 Texas residents on Jul 1, 2025. The clock below starts from that official figure and projects forward at last year's pace (about $85.1M a day), the official change from Jun 30, 2023 to Jun 30, 2024. The Census Bureau reports Texas's state + local debt once a year, not daily, so the ticking number is a projection, not an official figure; it re-bases when the next annual reports come out.

Real borrowing happens in lumps when bonds are sold and is repaid on schedules, so the live number is a straight-line projection from the latest Census year, shown here next to the official totals.

How it works

Official annual figures · projection labelled · sources linked

The live number = latest official total + (last year's official change per second × seconds since that total). The Census Bureau publishes Texas's state + local debt once a year, not daily, so this is a projection between annual reports, not an official figure.

projected = 389,326,794,000 + 984.8849 × (seconds since Jun 30, 2024 11:59:59 PM CT)

The rate is each part's official change over its latest year, added up: state debt $70,050,561,000 − $53,473,418,000 = $16,577,143,000; local debt $319,276,233,000 − $304,708,952,000 = $14,567,281,000; combined $31,144,424,000 over 366 days = $984.88 per second. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new annual reports come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.

How often it's published. Annual. The Census Bureau's Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances comes out about two years after the fiscal year (survey year 2024: July 2026; survey year 2023: July 2025). The next Census figures, for survey year 2025, are expected around mid-2027, based on the last two release dates. The state's own report (shown as a secondary line) updates sooner.

Per Texan divides by the Census Bureau's estimate of 31,709,821 residents on Jul 1, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-Texan figure rises only with the debt.

Note. Census publishes Texas's state + local total as $389.33 billion for 2024 (coefficient of variation 0.89%) and $358.18 billion for 2023. State + local here is exactly Census's state figure plus its local figure.

Note. Census's figures are the newest official state + local totals that use one definition for all 50 states, but they lag about two years, so the live clock projects from June 30, 2024. The state's own report (Texas Bond Review Board, FY2025) is fresher and counted differently; it is shown separately and never added. For the same year the two agree closely: the board's FY2023 state + local total is $380.65 billion, against Census's $389.33 billion for survey year 2024, which holds Texas's FY2023.

Note. About the Bond Review Board figure: The local report's summary bullet says $368.30 billion ($256.64B tax-supported, $111.66B revenue), but its own Tables 1.1 and 1.3 and its Chapter 1 text say $368.89 billion ($257.02B and $111.86B). We use the table figure.

Note. About the Bond Review Board figure: State and local totals come from separate Bond Review Board reports and are added as published; the board does not publish a combined total for the same date.

Note. Not included: unfunded pension and retiree-health liabilities, and the state's share of the federal debt.

Note. Texas's state fiscal year ends August 31, so Census survey year 2024 holds the state's fiscal year ended Aug 31, 2023; local governments' years vary. Census survey year 2024 covers each government's fiscal year that ended between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024; the clock dates it June 30, 2024, the end of that window.

Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
