China Debt Clock

The central government of China owed ¥43,926,200,000,000 (¥43.93 trillion) on Jun 30, 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance of China, Central Government Operations And Debt. This is the Ministry of Finance's central government debt balance: debt of the central government only, in yuan, at the end of each quarter, split into domestic and foreign debt. Local governments' debt is not in it. The Ministry reports local government debt balances separately, so this page does not show the debt of the whole public sector. The figure is published as a table in a PDF on the Ministry's statistics page, under China's commitment to the IMF's Special Data Dissemination Standard, and the fetcher reads that table directly. That is ¥31,266.65 per person: the debt divided by the NBS's estimate of 1,404,890,000 people in China on Dec 31, 2025. The clock below starts from that official figure and projects forward at the past 12 months' pace (about ¥16.34B a day), the official change from Jun 30, 2025 to Jun 30, 2026. China reports its debt once a quarter, not daily, so the ticking number is a projection, not an official figure; it re-bases when the next quarterly figures come out.

How it works

Official quarterly figures · projection labelled · sources linked

The live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). China publishes its debt once a quarter, not daily, so this is a projection between quarterly figures, not an official figure.

projected = 43,926,200,000,000 + 189,066.4637 × (seconds since Jun 30, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)

The rate is the official change from Jun 30, 2025 to Jun 30, 2026: ¥43,926,200,000,000 − ¥37,963,800,000,000 = ¥5,962,400,000,000 over 365 days = ¥189,066.46 per second. We use the latest four quarters rather than the last quarter because quarter-to-quarter changes swing with the bond issuance calendar. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new quarterly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.

How often it's published. Quarterly. The Ministry of Finance publishes the quarter-end table on its statistics page, usually within a few weeks of the end of the quarter. The Q3 2026 quarter-end balance is expected from the Ministry of Finance roughly four weeks after the quarter ends; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears.

Per person divides by the NBS's estimate of 1,404,890,000 people on Dec 31, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.

Note. Source and transparency: the figures are those the Ministry of Finance publishes under the IMF's Special Data Dissemination Standard. This page does not adjust, estimate or reconcile them with other sources.

Note. Scope: the measure is central government debt only. Local government debt is reported separately and is not added here, so this is not a total for the Chinese public sector. For scale, the Ministry of Finance's report on the 2025 budget execution (March 2026) gives the local government debt balance at the end of 2025 as ¥54.82 trillion (general debt ¥17.51 trillion, special debt ¥37.31 trillion, including local government debt used to replace hidden debt) and the central government debt balance as ¥41.23 trillion, which matches the Q4 2025 figure in this series.

Note. Format: the quarterly figures are published as PDF tables. If the PDF layout or the web page changes so that the fetcher cannot read it with certainty, the page keeps the last official figure it has and the daily build leaves it untouched.

Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
