How it works
Official monthly figures · projection labelled · sources linkedThe live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). United Kingdom publishes its debt once a month, not daily, so this is a projection between monthly figures, not an official figure.
projected = 3,231,915,000,000 + 5,552.5431 × (seconds since Sep 30, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)
The rate is the official change from Sep 30, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026: £3,231,915,000,000 − £3,056,810,000,000 = £175,105,000,000 over 365 days = £5,552.54 per second. We use 12 months rather than the last month because month-to-month changes swing with gilt auctions, redemptions and Treasury-bill rollovers. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new monthly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.
How often it's published. Monthly. The ONS publishes each month-end figure in its public sector finances release, about three weeks after the month ends (series BKPX). The latest months are provisional and are revised. The October 2026 month-end figure is expected in the ONS public sector finances release about three weeks after the month ends; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears.
Per person divides by the ONS estimate of 69,483,900 people on Jun 30, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.
Note. Why this measure: the US clock ticks Treasury's Total Public Debt Outstanding, a gross total that counts securities held by the Federal Reserve. The ONS general government gross debt is the UK series built the same way: gross, and including gilts held by the central bank. The UK usually quotes public sector net debt (PSND) instead, which is net of liquid assets and covers more of the public sector.
Note. Gross and net differ by hundreds of billions of pounds. We show the net figures as separate facts so a reader can compare them with news reports; they are never added to the headline.
Note. Population: debt per person divides by the ONS mid-2025 estimate for the whole UK, the latest published; it is not projected forward.
Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
