Japan Debt Clock

The Japanese central government owed ¥1,346,683,300,000,000 (¥1,346.68 trillion) on Jun 30, 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance Japan, Central Government Debt. This is the total of the Ministry of Finance's "Central Government Debt" table: the government bonds (including Japanese government bonds and the bonds issued for the Fiscal Investment and Loan Program), borrowings and financing bills the central government has issued and not repaid, in yen and before subtracting any financial assets. The Ministry notes that the figures include government bonds held by, and borrowings within, the government itself. They also include bonds held by the Bank of Japan, just as the US figure includes securities held by the Federal Reserve and by government trust funds. Debts the government has guaranteed are published separately and are not added. Local governments' own debt is not in it. Amounts are in yen. That is ¥10,929,983.77 per person: the debt divided by the Statistics Bureau's estimate of 123,210,000 people in Japan on Oct 1, 2025. The clock below starts from that official figure and projects forward at the past 12 months' pace (about ¥39.72B a day), the official change from Jun 30, 2025 to Jun 30, 2026. Japan reports its debt once a quarter, not daily, so the ticking number is a projection, not an official figure; it re-bases when the next quarterly figures come out.

How it works

Official quarterly figures · projection labelled · sources linked

The live number = latest official total + (the official change per second over the past 12 months × seconds since that total). Japan publishes its debt once a quarter, not daily, so this is a projection between quarterly figures, not an official figure.

projected = 1,346,683,300,000,000 + 459,668.3156 × (seconds since Jun 30, 2026 11:59:59 PM CT)

The rate is the official change from Jun 30, 2025 to Jun 30, 2026: ¥1,346,683,300,000,000 − ¥1,332,187,200,000,000 = ¥14,496,100,000,000 over 365 days = ¥459,668.32 per second. We use the latest four quarters rather than the last quarter because quarter-to-quarter changes swing with the issuance calendar and short-term bill rollovers. The actual path is lumpy (bonds are sold in batches and repaid on schedules), so the projection will drift; when new quarterly figures come out, the clock re-bases to the new official figures.

How often it's published. Quarterly. The Ministry of Finance publishes each quarter-end figure about six weeks after the quarter ends. The September 2026 quarter-end figure is expected from the Ministry of Finance roughly six weeks after the quarter ends; this page re-bases to it automatically on the next daily build after it appears.

Per person divides by the Statistics Bureau's estimate of 123,210,000 people on Oct 1, 2025. It is not projected forward, so the live per-person figure rises only with the debt.

Note. Why this measure: the US clock ticks the Treasury's gross debt. The Ministry of Finance's Central Government Debt total is the Japanese equivalent: everything the central government has issued or borrowed and not repaid, including bonds held by the Bank of Japan.

Note. Net position: this is gross debt. It is not net of the government's financial assets, so it is not comparable with net-debt figures published by international organisations.

Note. Reporting date: the Ministry of Finance publishes the figures for the end of March, June, September and December.

Note. Figures from source tables may not add exactly because of rounding in the source.
