When will US debt hit $41 trillion?
Answer. At its recent pace, around Jan 13, 2027. The debt was $40,463,151,897,249 at Treasury's Oct 23, 2026 close, $536.8 billion short of $41 trillion. That date is our projection from Treasury's daily figures, not a Treasury forecast.
| Pace used | Per day | Projected $41T date (CT) |
|---|---|---|
| 90-day least-squares trend (63 daily closes; the rate the live clock uses) | $6.6 billion | Jan 13, 2027 |
| Straight line from Jul 27, 2026 to Oct 23, 2026 (first and last close only) | $8.5 billion | Dec 25, 2026 |
The two paces bracket a reasonable range. Daily moves are lumpy (big jumps on auction settlement days, dips when trust-fund securities mature), so the actual crossing can land days or weeks either side.
The debt limit
The statutory debt limit is $41,103,996,000,000 ($41.104 trillion), per Treasury's Daily Treasury Statement. It applies to debt subject to the limit, which was $40,263,669,000,000 on Oct 23, 2026, leaving $840.3 billion of room. About $199.5 billion of the total debt is not subject to the limit, so total debt reaches $41 trillion when debt subject to the limit is about $40.801 trillion, still under the limit; the limit itself would bind with total debt near $41.30 trillion. At the 90-day pace of debt subject to the limit, the limit would be reached around Mar 5, 2027 (our projection). Once the limit binds, Treasury uses extraordinary measures and the debt goes roughly flat; our clock then stops projecting growth and holds at the official figure.
